Big Ideas
Indigenous Tech Indigenous tools and technologies can be adapted for specific purposes. Yukon First Nations developed different ancestral technologies (ie: knowledge) and tools for a variety of complex tasks
Contemporary Indigenous Studies The identities, worldviews and languages of Indigenous peoples are renewed, sustained, and transformed through their connection to the land and knowledge
Reflection Questions: 1. How did the activity this week “carving and conversation” connect you to (or not connect you to) Indigenous ways of knowing, being, or doing? - - Can we use carving as a tool to help students think deeply about complex ideas (e.g. how do we train locals for local jobs). The idea is that carving is a hands on task that allows the carver to think deeply while still working on their carving. This is opposite to social media where thinking is 'thin' and fast paced. -
2. Did it connect you to the land? How? - - Is it possible to feel connected to the while at the school? Is it possible while in town and not on the land? While carving a student might feel some connection to the land through working with wood. Students might feel a connection by thinking of life on the land before contact. -
3. Did it connect you Indigenous knowledge (ie: technologies) How? - - The first carving is a pendant using the style gifted to the class by Darcy M. who is a direct descendant of Chief Issacs. -
4. Summary - Show us! Upload 3 photos to this post and to the class website to show your work in progress, tools, & classroom environment.

5. Self Assess Indigenous Studies Curriculum (Ashlea, Alexis, Seth, Jaymi) : Use Indigenous principles of learning (holistic, experiential, reflective, and relational) to better understand connectedness and the reciprocal relationship of First Peoples to the Land
Indigenous Tech Curriculum (Darnel, Liam, Orion, Jamie) Use Indigenous technology to engage in a period of user-centered research done directly with potential users (eachother) to understand how we do things and why, our physical and emotional needs, how we think about the world, and what is meaningful to us
